As a fourteen year old, Denis Groom, brought up in Collingwood, was recommended a cricket club to develop his cricketing talents. Seeing the De Winton oval on the train he got off at Rosanna and introduced himself to the training group. The year was 1964. What is remarkable is that the recommended club was one station further, Macleod! Denis has been an outstanding cricketer for the Rosanna Cricket Club, an exceptional wicketkeeper getting the job done and typically a great team motivator in the field.
Denis has contributed both on and off the field. Denis Groom; the secretary, the bar manager, the canteen manager, the first eleven premiership player, the three times W.P. Luby Memorial Award winner, the life member, the leading wicket-keeper by way of dismissals (double his nearest teammate), the 3rd highest run scorer of all time, the most games played. Take your pick.
Denis started his RCC playing career in 1965 and has since managed to amass over 8,000 runs (including 3 centuries) and is closing in on 700 dismissals as his sides wicket-keeper. Groomy, as we all know him, played in the 1977/78 first eleven premiership team as well as the 1985/86 2nd XI premiership team. He was the club secretary from 1989/90 to 1991/92 as well as being bar manager and canteen manager for many seasons and a club sponsor. Awarded life membership in 1985, Groomy is by all definitions a club legend.
